The sermon is not simply a lecture about Jesus or the Christian life; rather, it is Jesus speaking to His people to give them life.  It is not a classroom exercise in education, though it will teach.  It is not a pep rally, though it may excite.  It is not an attempt to rile people up, though the Law always accuses and agitates.  It is not a psychotherapy session aimed at soothing emotions, though the Gospel always comforts.  It is not simply a history lesson, though it will be grounded in history.  It is primarily the proclamation of Christ as revealed in the text, Christ who is now present in the midst of His gathered people.
