Until the day Christ returns, every person will experience death as the last event of his or her physical life.  And no matter now strong the will to avoid death or how advanced the medicine, everybody ultimatley dies.  This is a tragic situation.  Adam and Eve were not created to die.  God imposed death as a penalty of sin in Genesis 2:17 and 3:19.  This unnatural situation that we find ourselves in leads to fear and a horror of death.  Christians bear this consequence of sin, just like everyone else.  But for the Christian, death is deliverance, not punishment.  Paul tells us that because we have been forgiven our sins in Christ, "Death is swallowed up in victory.  O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?  The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.  But thanks be to God who gives us the vitory through our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Corinthians 15:54-57).  For Christians, death is a change for the better.  This is why a Christian can overcome the natural fear of death and depart in peace.
