In comparison with Christian joy all the joy that ever was on earth or is yet to come is to be considered mere child's play.  For no worldly joy is so great and glorious that it is not impure and mixed with sorrow, or that sorrow does not follow it.  For this reason Solomon says; "Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful, and the end of that mirth is heaviness" (Prov. 14:13).  Therefore it cannot last.  Not only do all sorts of misery and pain constantly hinder it, but bodily death finally comes and puts an end to it; and where there is no faith in Christ, damnation and eternal death follow upon this brief, miserable, beggarly joy.
