International Outreach (iO), is affiliated with International Student Ministry (ISM), a Recognized Service Organization (RSO) of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod (LCMS). This mission opportunity began at Luther Memorial Chapel (LMC) in 2010, so we are now in our 10th year in 2020! Through hospitality, friendship, English language classes, Bible reading and a Worldview Conversations class, we share the love of Jesus with those from other lands. The popular Exchange Room, maintained with donated goods, offers a variety of mainly household items at no cost to our international friends. The majority of those we serve are associated with UW-M for one year and often includes their spouses, children and parents.
We offer classes several days a week, including English conversation, instruction in grammar and vocabulary, cultural information, opportunities for Bible reading and study, and a program for children. Special events throughout the year provide shared meals and activities which often include a Christ-centered presentation appropriate to the season. While small group trips in the community are popular, sharing a meal in an American home is a treasured experience.
All this work is made possible through gifts from churches, individuals, LWML groups and grants, as well as volunteers from at least four SWD congregations. We have been blessed to see dozens of people come to faith in our Lord and be baptized and even confirmed into God’s family. We are on an exciting mission journey and if you want to partner with us in some way, please contact me, Julie Wohlrabe, iO Director. I would love to tell you more!
